Airport Workers Against Abuse
72% of GMB members working in airports have felt unsafe at work due to abuse and aggression from passengers.
Why this campaign matters
Abuse in airports is a real and growing problem. That’s why we launched Airport Workers Against Abuse, a broad and inclusive campaign to reduce the abuse and protect the dignity of airport workers.
In 2024, a GMB Union Aviation Sector survey found that seventy two percent of airport workers felt unsafe at work because of abuse or aggressive behaviour from passengers. Sixty one percent had considered leaving the industry because of it.
One worker said: "I was told to go back to where I came from"
What we are calling for
Airport authorities and employers
- Remove and bar abusive passengers on the spot.
- Train managers to carry out walkabouts of passenger facing areas.
Government and politicians
- Launch a public awareness campaign focusing on zero tolerance for violence and abuse in airports. Include border security style messaging that highlights consequences for abusive behaviour.
Airlines
- Add clear terms and conditions that require passengers to agree not to physically or verbally abuse airport workers. Set out clear consequences for anyone who does.
