GMB London to join protest over Carillion job losses on 18 April outside the British Museum

What has happened with Carillion yet again shows the perils of allowing privatisation to run rampant in our museums, says GMB London

GMB, the union for staff at Carillion, are supporting a demonstration organised by PCS regarding the support staff at the British Museum, who following the collapse of Carillion now have no guarantees for the future of their jobs, terms and conditions or their pensions.

The collapse of Carillion was one of the largest company failures in the UK in recent years, with reported debts of £1.3 billion and an estimated pension deficit of £2.6 billion.

The Guardian reported that Carillion employed 43,000. Of that number 19,500 were thought to be employed in the UK delivering public services. Some workers were employed in the construction sector on state contracts, such as HS2 and Crossrail.

Details of the demonstration are as follows:

Wednesday 18 April 2018

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Outside the British Museum,

Great Russell Street,

Bloomsbury,

London

WC1B 3DG

Vaughan West, GMB Regional Officer said:

“This demonstration is in support of all the support staff at the British Museum, who since the collapse of Carillion in January, have had no guarantees for the future of their jobs, for their terms and conditions, or their pensions.

"There is no place for private companies who answer to shareholders, rather than the service users, in our public services.

"What has happened with Carillion yet again shows the perils of allowing privatisation to run rampant in our museums.”
