GMB London Region has today [Monday 9 June] welcomed the Government’s announcement that it has reversed its decision to remove winter fuel payments from all but the poorest pensioners.
The Region had been deeply critical of the decision to remove this crucial support and wrote to local MPs to urge a reversal.
Warren Kenny, Regional Secretary, said:
“We welcome the Government's decision to reverse changes to the Winter Fuel Payment.
“Each community faces different challenges, and it is unjust to enforce blanket policies that do not take into account the varying levels of poverty and hardship.
“This policy was the result of sidelining pensioners’ voices when they should have been listened to.
"It is crucial that future decisions prioritise their basic needs, ensuring that they are not left in financial or physical jeopardy.”
