GMB welcome Transport for London's decision to delay implementation of English Language test guidelines for private hire drivers until September 2020

This is a victory for common sense, says GMB London Region

GMB London Region have welcomed Transport for London’s decision to delay implementation of the English language test guidelines for private hire drivers until September 2020.

Some weeks ago GMB wrote to TFL making a request to delay matters based on assurances that a review would take place by April and that no changes have been affected.

The Department for Transport’s start and finish review is now being consulted on and in particular the English language requirements are being reviewed nationally. This will be an opportunity to seek a low-cost alternative.

Steve Garelick, GMB Regional Officer said:

“This is a victory for common sense and I hope that an appropriate test that can ensure public safety and a good service will come as a result of the consultation

“GMB of course supports thorough testing to make sure that private hire in London is pre-eminent worldwide.”
