GMB prisoner transport staff stage royal courts of justice protest over real terms pay cut

Prison transport drivers have worked throughout the pandemic, transporting and escorting some of society's most challenging individuals

GMB members for Serco prisoner transport are set to protest outside the Royal Courts of Justice after the company hit them with a real-terms pay cut.

The demonstration takes place as follows:

Where: The Royal Courts of Justice, Strand, London, WC2A 2LL

The drivers, who work for Serco prisoner transport were offered a pay rise of just 0.5% - plus £300 - in the first year and 1.25% in the second year.

The latest RPI figures have inflation at 3.3%  - which means Serco are enforcing a real-terms pay cut in the midst of a chronic driver shortage across the UK.

The prisoner transport workers voted to reject the 2019/2022 pay offer  -  yet bosses imposed it on them anyway.

Paul Meddes, GMB Organiser, said:

“GMB's justice members have worked throughout the pandemic, transporting and escorting some of society's most challenging individuals.

“They are facing worryingly unsafe staffing levels and yet Serco, who have financially benefited from the pandemic, have turned a blind eye to them and imposed a paltry pay deal.

“They are rightly angry and are gathering at the Royal Courts of Justice to demand better.”
