GMB Union, which represents thousands of private hire drivers across the country, has today [28 May] welcomed new Uber app features that will make journeys safer for drivers and passengers.
As of today, passengers will be able to record audio of their trip via app either before or during a trip, and the platform is also introducing a verified badge to confirm that a passengers' details have been cross-checked.
Steve Garelick, GMB Regional Organiser said:
"GMB welcomes steps to keep our members safe, and we believe these new features will give drivers greater confidence when accepting bookings.
"Drivers never know who might step into their car and how they might behave.
"The verification feature, which GMB has been requesting for some time, provides additional reassurance for drivers, as they know who to expect at pick-up.
"The new audio recording option could prove beneficial for providing an objective record of anything that happens on a trip."
