Royal Parks Gardeners Vote for Strike Action

Gardeners working in some of London's most prestigious parks, including Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, and St James's Park, have voted to strike in a row over pay. 

The workers, who are employed by sub-contractor Idverde for The Royal Parks and represented by GMB Union, voted 95 per cent in favour of a strike, on an 75 per cent turnout. 

The dispute arose after skilled gardeners and team leaders were offered a pay rise amounting to 70p an hour. 

They are currently being paid just 55p an hour above London Living Wage. 

GMB has accused Idverde of failing to reward workers' skills and experience, and of treating the London Living Wage as a ceiling rather than a floor. 

Anna Lee, GMB Regional Organiser, said: 

“Our members create and maintain these amazing spaces and to be offered 70p is just an insult. 

"They are skilled, experienced professionals and they know what their labour is worth. 

"We're calling on Idverde to get back round the table and offer our members a fair pay deal."
