Shell Bacton Gas Terminal workers vote to strike in pay row

Altrad workers at the Shell Bacton Gas Terminal have voted to strike in row over pay.

The strike ballot, which opened on 4^th September and closed today (Thursday 18^th September), resulted in 100 per cent of members backing strike action on a 96 per cent turnout.

At the centre of the dispute is Altrad’s offer of a one-time 4 per cent pay uplift, which falls far short of the two-year deal of 11.3 per cent and 5.5 per cent proposed under the National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry.

Members are furious due to the spiralling cost of living as well as the fact that Altrad workers at an adjacent site are being paid more for the same work following another dispute resolved by GMB.

The Shell Bacton Gas Terminal delivers gas for the National Transmission System, which in turn provides gas domestic and industrial use.

Paul Block, GMB Regional Organiser, said:

“GMB representatives have worked hard to try and negotiate a resolution to this dispute.

“This mandate shows the strength of feeling among our membership.

“It is in the best interests of Altrad management to reflect on this result, listen to our members, and come back to the table urgently.

“Failure to resolve this dispute will result in strike action, which would bring work on this site to a standstill.”
