GMB London call on Football Association to level up prize money for women's teams in the FA Cup to that paid to men's teams

For women's teams competing in the first round, the prize money is £850 compared with £22,629 for men's teams in the same round and over the whole competition women’s teams get less than 5% of the prize money paid to men’s teams says GMB London.

GMB London is calling on the Football Association to level up the prize money available for women's teams in the FA Cup to the level paid to men's teams in the same competition.

This call has come after the women's team from Clapton CFC - an amateur club from East London supported by GMB London with GMB members involved in running it- reached the third round of the FA Cup earlier this month. GMB London were advised that the winner v Plymouth Argyll would receive £1,250. The prize money for a men's team winning the equivalent round of the FA cup is £82,000.

Warren Kenny, GMB London Regional Secretary, said:

"For women's teams competing in the FA Cup first round proper, the prize money is £850 compared with £22,629 for men's teams in the same round.

“Overall the total prize money for the women's FA Cup is £309,000 which is shared by 300 teams.  This compares with £15.9 million for the men's FA Cup which is shared by 735 teams. As an average per team over the whole competition women’s teams get less than 5% of the prize money paid to men’s teams.

“The FA should level up the prize money available for women's teams in the FA Cup to the level paid to the men's teams in the same competition.  This should be an important policy commitment by the whole football community. There is money in the game to facilitate this.

One option could be to secure a sponsor who is committed to levelling up the prize money for women's teams in the FA Cup. "
