GMB London welcomes the initiative by Transport for London (TfL) to support the Taxi and Private Hire sector with the provision of supplies and advice to protect drivers and passengers in the fight against the spread of Covid.

GMB the union for workers in the Taxi and Private Hire sector have been informed that distribution of face mask, bottles of sanitiser, passenger-facing messaging and an instructional video on how to clean and sanitise vehicles will be distributed to TfL licensed carriers from the launch date of Friday 4th December.

GMB London has been putting pressure on TfL for this type of help and protection for some time so very much welcomes this announcement and commitment from TfL. We hope that in the lead up to the festive season and the expected increased demand for private hire transport this initiative will help alleviate the risks, concerns and costs endured by taxi and private hire drivers. The move should also encourage usage by the travelling public knowing that carriers are adhering to Covid safety measures supported by TfL.

Steve Garelick, GMB London Region Organiser said:

“GMB Union are delighted to learn of this initiative giving protection to drivers and the public alike. This extra support is heartening at such a precarious time for the taxi and private hire trades that have been decimated by the pandemic.”
