GMB support National Windrush Day on Friday 22 June and call for action to be taken against deportations and discriminatory treatment of Windrush generation and their descendants

GMB London are supporting National Windrush Day on Friday 22 June, to celebrate the immigrants who were invited to the UK between 1948 and 1971 from Commonwealth Countries such as Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.
GMB have also pledged to support any of its members affected by recent revelations where the Windrush generation and their children have been wrongly detained and deported, or have been denied access to healthcare, work, housing benefits and pensions.

“GMB are supporting National Windrush Day, which is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the first migrants disembarking at Tilbury Docks in Essex, in 1948, and condemn the unfair and discriminatory treatment of the Windrush generation and their descendants.
“We are demanding that immediate attention be given to those who were deported, suffered loss of Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), had problems in relation to housing, employment, healthcare, bank accounts, driving licences, freedom of movement in the EU states, detention or threats of detention or removal from the UK and also those who have suffered alleged violations of their civil liberties and human rights as a consequence of the implementation of the Immigration Acts 2014 and 2016.
“We need to investigate the extent of the damage that the policy of creating a hostile environment has done to the lives of people who have a legitimate right to live and have access to public services in the UK and for those to be identified.
“We call on action to ensure and facilitate the right to obtain a British passport at no additional cost for naturalisation and the reversal of the burden of proof so that the burden of proof of evidence of arriving in the UK is on the Home Office to prove otherwise.
“We also call for the government to launch a full inquiry to demand public disclosure over the secret documents relating to the Windrush generation that Theresa May has blocked.
