In 2022, the 200th anniversary of the HM Coastguard Service, GMB is fighting for proper employment status for these dedicated professionals.
Gavin Davies, GMB London Region Senior Organiser said:
“HM Coast Guards are on call and available to work day and night.
“They are paid expenses as other volunteers are but the difference is that they are also paid an hourly rate which is equivalent to the National Minimum Wage.
“They receive payslips, P60s and sometimes and when things go wrong their P45s but they are not entitled to full employment rights and the right to union representation.
“One of our members is currently taking this matter in a test case through the Employment Appeal Tribunal process on behalf of these 3,500 workers, backed by GMB. We are waiting on an appeal hearing.”
"GMB Union calls on this Government to act as a responsible employer and recognise that these are paid individuals and should be called workers. "
