GMB London welcome announcement of vote in parliament in the summer on approving 3rd runway at Heathrow Airport

We are committed to ensure that the airport meets all legal standards on safety, noise and pollution and will work with the community to achieve them, says GMB London

GMB, the union for airport staff, have welcomed the announcement that Parliament will vote, this summer, on whether they approve the recommendations in the Airport National Policy Statement, published today (23 March 2018). A positive vote would in effect give planning permission for construction of the Northwest Runway. [See notes to editors for Airport National Policy Statement and previous GMB press releases]

Warren Kenny GMB London Region Secretary said:

"The statement by the Transport Secretary that construction could begin in 2020 if Parliament during the summer gives the go ahead for outline permission for the 3rd runway at Heathrow Airport is welcome.

“The latest population growth projections for London by 2039 from ONS is for London to grow from 8.7m to 10.9m - an increase of 24.9%. London with a growing population cannot manage without more airport capacity. A 3rd runway at Heathrow Airport is essential and an additional runway at Gatwick Airport is also likely to be needed.

“Heathrow is essential to the prosperity of West London. However, it is essential that the airport owners make an unbreakable commitment to be a London Living Wage zone with all contractors paying a minimum of £10.20. It is also essential that precarious employment and zero hours jobs are not tolerated in that airport zone.

“GMB is committed to ensure that the airport meets all legal standards on safety, noise and pollution and will work with the community to achieve them."
