TSSA Union staff balloted for strike action again over 'bullying and intimidation'

GMB Union members working for the TSSA Union will begin voting in an industrial action ballot today [14th October] over accusations of a toxic workplace culture, rife with bullying and intimidation.

GMB - which represents almost all TSSA staff - has been in formal dispute with the union since January 2024 over issues including its failure to treat staff with respect, conduct fair disciplinary and grievance procedures, or address bullying and harassment.

TSSA is also accused of failing to implement the Kennedy Report’s recommendations.

A previous indicative ballot saw 100% of participating members vote in favour of taking industrial action over the dispute.

No attempt has been made to resolve these issues, despite GMB workplace representatives repeatedly raising them with TSSA senior leadership and strike action by staff last summer.

GMB suggested to the TSSA General Secretary that conciliation talks are held through ACAS to attempt to resolve the dispute, but this offer has been ignored.

In the latest escalation of the situation, TSSA suspended from work one of the GMB workplace representatives who has been raising concerns on behalf of staff.

GMB contends that this suspension represents an attempt to smear and silence their representative.

The ballot closes on 28th October.

John Colquhoun, GMB London Senior Organiser, said:

“TSSA senior leadership have consistently failed to follow union procedures on bullying or implement the recommendations from independent reports to address serious workplace culture issues.

“As a result, our members feel bullied and intimidated by their own General Secretary, who acts with impunity.

“Instead of attempting to resolve these issues, the TSSA has instead suspended one of the trade union representatives raising concerns on behalf of members.

“Our members are now going to have their say on how they have been treated by TSSA leadership.”
