GMB Union has signalled its support for Ukrainian nuclear workers held hostage by Russian forces at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, on the fourth anniversary of the occupation of the plant [4th March].

GMB, which represents nuclear workers sites across the country, including the Sizewell plant, has encouraged members to sign a petition calling on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to intervene to secure the Ukrainian workers’ release.

The petition has so far garnered over 50,000 signatures.

Tony Tanushi, GMB Energy Organiser, said:

“GMB extends its full solidarity and support to our Ukrainian colleagues at Zaporizhzhia, who are being held captive by Russian forces.

“These workers are civilians and there is no justification for their detention.

“We support the families’ petition and echo their calls for the IAEA to intervene so these workers can go home to their loved ones.”
