GMB backs Brent’s rapid testing for transport, logistics and delivery workers

Working with Brent Council GMB London has started to send out advice on Brent’s nine rapid outcome Covid test centres

GMB London welcomes rapid Covid testing facilities for key workers including food delivery drivers, couriers, taxi and transport workers. The test is free and available for people who show no Covid symptoms, living or working in Brent.

Workers in these roles travel to multiple locations in any one day and interact with many individuals. So, although not totally reliable, obtaining a test twice a week offers some assurance to workers who are at risk simply because of the type of work they perform.

Cllr Neil Nerva said:

This is a really important facility that helps those who live in Brent and those who engage with Brent Residents daily.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council added:

“Whatever we can do in Brent to support workers and our residents is practical in these disturbing times.

Steve Garelick, GMB London Regional Organiser said:

“GMB is working to create similar facilities in other local authorities. We have taken steps to advise other Unions involved in transportation, communications and logistics as well as TFL to make sure those workers can undertake these valuable tests that can help protect residents as well as workers and their families.”

GMB is calling on all councils to offer similar Covid lateral flow testing facilities for those living and working in the borough. Facilities like these will help with the fight to stop the spread of the virus, but can only be effective if everyone adheres to government guidance, including self-isolation.
