OFWAT 'not fit for purpose', GMB Congress hears

The Government must establish a new regulatory body to oversee water bodies, GMB Congress has heard today [Monday 9 June].
The union’s annual conference was told that water workers’ jobs, pay, and pensions need to be protected.
The private sector has failed Thames Water, and the government must take urgent special measures to prevent its collapse and guarantee that jobs are not lost, congress heard.
Cliff Roney, former water worker and GMB activist, told Congress:
“The water sector needs stronger regulation.
“The current regulatory body is not fit for purpose.
“The Independent Water Commission report confirmed that a ‘fundamental reset’ was needed when they published their interim findings last week.
“We need to protect customers, the environment, and jobs.”
