The decision to give Sizewell C the green light is ‘momentous’ and vital if the UK is to hit net zero, GMB has said.

The Chancellor confirmed funding for the multi-billion-pound reactor at GMB’s Congress in Brighton today [Tuesday].

GMB has long campaigned for Sizewell C – which will create 10,000 jobs and deliver clean power to millions of homes - to be given the go ahead

Warren Kenny, GMB Regional Secretary, said:

“This is a momentous announcement. Sizewell C is absolutely vital for the UK's energy security.

"Nuclear power is essential for clean, affordable, and reliable energy - without new nuclear there can be no net zero.

“Sizewell C will provide thousands of good, skilled, unionised jobs and we look forward to working closely with the Government and Sizewell C to help secure a greener future for this country’s energy sector.”

Jack Abbott, MP for Ipswich and the Government’s East of England Mission Champion, said:

“I am delighted the Chancellor has given the green light to Sizewell C - this is something I have been pressing the Government on for some time.

“It is a critically important project, one which will help deliver our Plan for Change and achieve our missions to boost growth and strengthen Britain’s energy security.

“The Chancellor’s decision will be a major catalyst to the growth of our local, regional, and national economy, kickstarting the creation of thousands of well-paid, skilled, and secure jobs and generating billions of pounds for our economy.

“Last Autumn, I signed an agreement with Sizewell C that guarantees at least 500 jobs for Ipswich residents, supports our colleges and university, and enhances investment into our local supply chain. Today’s news fires the starting gun on delivering all of this, and more.”
