London Weighting – The Sums Don’t Add Up!

Are you a member of School Support Staff in the one of these boroughs?

  • Newham
  • Brent
  • Haringey
  • Barking & Dagenham
  • Ealing

If so, you are receiving a different rate of London Weighting to the one paid to teachers.

School support staff working in the above London boroughs currently receive Outer London Weighting, whilst teachers in the same schools receive Inner London Weighting.

This is simply unfair and yet another example of school support staff not being valued in the same way as teachers. GMB is calling for all staff in the same school to receive the same classification of London Weighting.

What does it mean for me financially?

The difference between Inner London and Outer London Weighting is worth well over £1000. Support staff already lose out due to Term-Time Only contracts, which mean they only get paid 39 weeks a year. This different rate of London Weighting is just another example of school support staff not being properly valued.

Why has this happened?

Teachers are on different terms & conditions (the Burgundy Book) and these classify areas within London differently to the Support Staff terms & conditions (the Green Book). Over many years, the Greater London Council/Greater London Authority and now the GLPC (which sets the rates for London Weighting) have known of this inequality in the application of inner and outer London Weighting rates but have not acted to ensure equality between the two groups.

I want to get involved in the campaign for fair London Weighting for support staff in my school, how do I do this?

Tell your colleagues about this unfairness and if they are not already a member get them to join GMB. To be able to apply pressure for support staff to paid Inner London Weighting, we need to build our strength in your school so that the voice of support staff is heard. GMB will be taking this campaign across your local area, but it starts today in your school!

GMB members are coming together to call for an end to this disparity, and demand support staff are paid the same rate of London Weighting as the teachers in their school.

Join GMB Union today and stand with your colleagues to fight for fairness in your work.
